College Basketball (Texas, Kentucky, and Florida)

West Virginia’s men’s basketball team has no one to blame but themselves for their loss yesterday to No. 2 ranked Texas. I don’t want to hear excuses about a foul that should have been called on the last play of the game. WV lost because of their miss free throws. Here’s a team that needs to recruit the guy on that commercial who made some 5,000+ free throws in a row. Even if the ref would have called a blocking foul as Gansey went up for what seemed to be an open lay-up, odds are he would have missed the free throws. Texas snuck out with a win last night and will face Iowa tonight in the Guardian’s Classic Final.

The Iowa Hawkeyes (No. 18) of course reached the final tonight by beating the No. 7 Kentucky Wildcats. I didn’t watch any of this game but the last minute (isn’t that pretty much the only minute you have to watch in all bball games?). Kentucky is always a good defensive team, but it look like they were outmatch against the Hawkeyes. I don’t want to get to off topic, but being a Gator fan has instilled a certain hatred for the Kentucky basketball team. Why is it no one can ever pronounce the names of the players on their team? Patrick Sparks is the only one you can say, and he’s the player I can’t stand the most. Does this guy think he’s the $%@ or what? Constantly running around like a little gnat and throwing up 3s. Wait till you coming to Florida!

Speaking of Florida Gators basketball, guess who finally got some respect? The Gators went from unranked to 15th in the coach’s poll and should see similar jumps in all other polls. Their next game is at home vs. FSU. FSU has a decent basketball team, but in no way can they match up against the Gators. Look for Florida to keep moving on up.

And about the picture... Even though I hate Kentucky Basketball, I will post a picture of Ashley Judd whenever given the opportunity.

Can there be any greater recruiting tool for a program than Ashley Judd? I love that picture.

And as a former Hawkeye, I raise my glass to Steve Alford for that win. He's been under a lot of scrutiny over the past 2-3 years, and probably saved his job with a NCAA tournament bid last season. But Iowa has gotten big wins in the preseason in previous years. I hope this is the one year Alford can build upon that and come into the Big 10 season strong.
